Saving What Remains

Avoiding Biopiracy

Pharmaceutical companies are changing the way they do business with the Indigenous people who provide them with the basis for new products.

The seeds of Bixa orellana have been used for centuries by Amazonians bright orange ceremonial facepaint. Recently the cosmetics company, Areda, began using Bixa, supplied directly by Yawana Indians in Brazil, in their products. In exchange for receiving a steady supply of Bixa, Areda provided the Yawana with solar technology that brought electricity to their villages and helped the Indians turn deforested lands into productive Bixa plantations.
