Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Definition:
Carbon dioxide (CO2) plays a critical role in creating and regulating the Earth’s climate. In 2011, the global average concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere was 391 parts per million, a significant increase above pre-industrial levels of 280 parts per million. Major sources of atmospheric carbon dioxide are deforestation and degradation, burning fossil fuels, combustion of organic matter, respiration processes of living aerobic organisms, and volcanic outgassing. CO2 composes 44/12ths or 3.67 of carbon by weight. CO2 persists in the atmosphere for about 200–450 years and its global warming potential is defined as 1.
