STATISTICS: Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso

29.0% —or about 6,794,000 hectares—of Burkina Faso is forested. Of this, none is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Burkina Faso lost an average of 24,000 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual deforestation rate of 0.34%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change increased by 3.5% to 0.35% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Burkina Faso lost 5.0% of its forest cover, or around 360,000 hectares. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Burkina Faso lost 2.8% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Burkina Faso has some 636 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 0.3% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 1.4% are threatened. Burkina Faso is home to at least 1100 species of vascular plants. 11.5% of Burkina Faso is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Burkina Faso: Economy
Economy - overview:One of the poorest countries in the world, landlocked Burkina Faso has few natural resources and a weak industrial base. About 90% of the population is engaged in subsistence agriculture, which is vulnerable to harsh climatic conditions. Cotton is the key crop and the government has joined with other cotton producing countries in the region to lobby for improved access to Western markets. GDP growth has largely been driven by increases in world cotton prices. Industry remains dominated by unprofitable government-controlled corporations. Following the CFA franc currency devaluation in January 1994 the government updated its development program in conjunction with international agencies; exports and economic growth have increased. The government devolved macroeconomic policy and inflation targeting to the West African regional central bank (BCEAO), but maintains control over fiscal and microeconomic policies, including implementing reforms to encourage private investment. The bitter internal crisis in neighboring Cte d'Ivoire continues to hurt trade and industrial prospects and deepens the need for international assistance.
