STATISTICS: Chad

Chad

9.5% —or about 11,921,000 hectares—of Chad is forested. Of this, 1.6% —or roughly 190,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Chad lost an average of 79,300 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual deforestation rate of 0.60%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change increased by 6.3% to 0.64% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Chad lost 9.1% of its forest cover, or around 1,189,000 hectares. Chad lost -19,000 hectares—0—of its primary forest cover during that time. Deforestation rates of primary cover have decreased 9.1% since the close of the 1990s. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Chad lost 9.1% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Chad has some 698 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 0.3% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 2.6% are threatened. Chad is home to at least 1600 species of vascular plants. 9.0% of Chad is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Chad: Economy
Economy - overview:Chad's primarily agricultural economy will continue to be boosted by major foreign direct investment projects in the oil sector that began in 2000. Over 80% of Chad's population relies on subsistence farming and livestock raising for its livelihood. Chad's economy has long been handicapped by its landlocked position, high energy costs, and a history of instability. Chad relies on foreign assistance and foreign capital for most public and private sector investment projects. A consortium led by two US companies has been investing $3.7 billion to develop oil reserves, estimated at 1 billion barrels, in southern Chad. The nation's total oil reserves have been estimated to be 2 billion barrels. Oil production came on stream in late 2003. Chad began to export oil in 2004. Cotton, cattle, and gum arabic provide the bulk of Chad's non-oil export earnings.
