STATISTICS: Finland

Finland

73.9% —or about 22,500,000 hectares—of Finland is forested. Of this, 6.3% —or roughly 1,419,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Finland gained an average of 28,100 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual reforestation rate of 0.13%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change decreased by 82.4% to 0.02% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Finland gained 1.4% of its forest cover, or around 306,000 hectares. Finland lost -72,000 hectares—0—of its primary forest cover during that time. Deforestation rates of primary cover have decreased 4.8% since the close of the 1990s. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Finland gained 0.8% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Finland has some 512 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 0.8% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 2.5% are threatened. Finland is home to at least 1102 species of vascular plants. 3.1% of Finland is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Finland: Economy
Economy - overview:Finland has a highly industrialized, largely free-market economy, with per capita output roughly that of the UK, France, Germany, and Italy. Its key economic sector is manufacturing - principally the wood, metals, engineering, telecommunications, and electronics industries. Trade is important, with exports equaling two-fifths of GDP. Finland excels in high-tech exports, e.g., mobile phones. Except for timber and several minerals, Finland depends on imports of raw materials, energy, and some components for manufactured goods. Because of the climate, agricultural development is limited to maintaining self-sufficiency in basic products. Forestry, an important export earner, provides a secondary occupation for the rural population. Rapidly increasing integration with Western Europe - Finland was one of the 12 countries joining the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) - will dominate the economic picture over the next several years. High unemployment remains a persistent problem.
