STATISTICS: Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe

47.3% —or about 80,000 hectares—of Guadeloupe is forested. Of this, 23.8% —or roughly 19,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Guadeloupe lost an average of 300 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual deforestation rate of 0.36%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change decreased by 30.9% to 0.25% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Guadeloupe lost 4.8% of its forest cover, or around 4,000 hectares. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Guadeloupe lost 2.4% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Guadeloupe has some 247 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 6.9% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 5.7% are threatened. Guadeloupe is home to at least 1400 species of vascular plants, of which 1.9% are endemic. 31.4% of Guadeloupe is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Guadeloupe: Economy
Economy - overview:The Caribbean economy depends on agriculture, tourism, light industry, and services. It also depends on France for large subsidies and imports. Tourism is a key industry, with most tourists from the US; an increasingly large number of cruise ships visit the islands. The traditional sugarcane crop is slowly being replaced by other crops, such as bananas (which now supply about 50% of export earnings), eggplant, and flowers. Other vegetables and root crops are cultivated for local consumption, although Guadeloupe is still dependent on imported food, mainly from France. Light industry features sugar and rum production. Most manufactured goods and fuel are imported. Unemployment is especially high among the young. Hurricanes periodically devastate the economy.
