STATISTICS: Guinea

Guinea

27.4% —or about 6,724,000 hectares—of Guinea is forested. Of this, 0.9% —or roughly 63,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Guinea lost an average of 50,400 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual deforestation rate of 0.68%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change decreased by 23.4% to 0.52% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Guinea lost 9.2% of its forest cover, or around 684,000 hectares. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Guinea lost 5.3% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Guinea has some 998 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 0.6% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 3.4% are threatened. Guinea is home to at least 3000 species of vascular plants, of which 2.9% are endemic. 0.2% of Guinea is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Guinea: Economy
Economy - overview:Guinea possesses major mineral, hydropower, and agricultural resources, yet remains an underdeveloped nation. The country possesses almost half of the world's bauxite reserves and is the second-largest bauxite producer. The mining sector accounted for over 70% of exports in 2004. Long-run improvements in government fiscal arrangements, literacy, and the legal framework are needed if the country is to move out of poverty. Fighting along the Sierra Leonean and Liberian borders, as well as refugee movements, have caused major economic disruptions, aggravating a loss in investor confidence. Panic buying has created food shortages and inflation and caused riots in local markets. Guinea is not receiving multilateral aid. The IMF and World Bank cut off most assistance in 2003. Growth rose slightly in 2005, primarily due to increases in global demand and commodity prices on world markets.
