STATISTICS: Mali

Mali

10.3% —or about 12,572,000 hectares—of Mali is forested.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Mali lost an average of 100,000 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual deforestation rate of 0.71%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change increased by 7.7% to 0.76% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Mali lost 10.7% of its forest cover, or around 1,500,000 hectares. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Mali lost 4.9% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Mali has some 897 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 0.7% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 2.0% are threatened. Mali is home to at least 1741 species of vascular plants, of which 0.6% are endemic. 3.6% of Mali is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Mali: Economy
Economy - overview:Mali is among the poorest countries in the world, with 65% of its land area desert or semidesert and with a highly unequal distribution of income. Economic activity is largely confined to the riverine area irrigated by the Niger. About 10% of the population is nomadic and some 80% of the labor force is engaged in farming and fishing. Industrial activity is concentrated on processing farm commodities. Mali is heavily dependent on foreign aid and vulnerable to fluctuations in world prices for cotton, its main export, along with gold. The government has continued its successful implementation of an IMF-recommended structural adjustment program that is helping the economy grow, diversify, and attract foreign investment. Mali's adherence to economic reform and the 50% devaluation of the CFA franc in January 1994 have pushed up economic growth to a sturdy 5% average in 1996-2005. Worker remittances and external trade routes for the landlocked country have been jeopardized by continued unrest in neighboring Cte d'Ivoire.
