STATISTICS: Norway

Norway

30.7% —or about 9,387,000 hectares—of Norway is forested. Of this, 2.7% —or roughly 250,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Norway gained an average of 17,100 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual reforestation rate of 0.19%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change decreased by 1.3% to 0.18% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Norway gained 2.8% of its forest cover, or around 257,000 hectares. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Norway lost 0.3% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Norway has some 537 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 0.9% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 2.8% are threatened. Norway is home to at least 1715 species of vascular plants, of which 0.1% are endemic. 6.1% of Norway is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Norway: Economy
Economy - overview:The Norwegian economy is a prosperous bastion of welfare capitalism, featuring a combination of free market activity and government intervention. The government controls key areas, such as the vital petroleum sector (through large-scale state enterprises). The country is richly endowed with natural resources - petroleum, hydropower, fish, forests, and minerals - and is highly dependent on its oil production and international oil prices, with oil and gas accounting for one-third of exports. Only Saudi Arabia and Russia export more oil than Norway. Norway opted to stay out of the EU during a referendum in November 1994; nonetheless, it contributes sizably to the EU budget. The government has moved ahead with privatization. Norwegians worry about that time in the next two decades when the oil and gas will begin to run out; accordingly, Norway has been saving its oil-boosted budget surpluses in a Government Petroleum Fund, which is invested abroad and now is valued at more than $150 billion. After lackluster growth of 1% in 2002 and 0.5% in 2003, GDP growth picked up to 3.3% in 2004 and to 3.8% in 2005.
