STATISTICS: Togo

Togo

7.1% —or about 386,000 hectares—of Togo is forested. Of this, none is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Togo lost an average of 19,900 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual deforestation rate of 2.91%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change increased by 41.7% to 4.12% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Togo lost 43.7% of its forest cover, or around 299,000 hectares. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Togo lost 16.4% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Togo has some 867 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 0.6% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 1.6% are threatened. Togo is home to at least 3085 species of vascular plants. 7.5% of Togo is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Togo: Economy
Economy - overview:This small sub-Saharan economy is heavily dependent on both commercial and subsistence agriculture, which provides employment for 65% of the labor force. Some basic foodstuffs must still be imported. Cocoa, coffee, and cotton generate about 40% of export earnings, with cotton being the most important cash crop. Togo is the world's fourth-largest producer of phosphate. The government's decade-long effort, supported by the World Bank and the IMF, to implement economic reform measures, encourage foreign investment, and bring revenues in line with expenditures has moved slowly. Progress depends on following through on privatization, increased openness in government financial operations, progress toward legislative elections, and continued support from foreign donors. Togo is working with donors to write a PRGF that could eventually lead to a debt reduction plan.
