The Biggest Lemur: Indri (Indri indri)

The Indri (also known as the Babakoto) is the biggest living lemur. A tree-dwelling Madagascar species, the Indri is known to grow as tall as 3 feet, and weigh as much as 10 pounds. Its long, muscular legs propel it from tree to tree, and its black face is framed by round, fuzzy ears. Unlike any other lemur, Indri have only a small tail. Indri are highly social, and a known for their loud songs, which they shout together from the treetops. Indri eat leaves of trees, along with seeds and fruit. It has been classified as an endangered species, particularly due to deforestation in Madagascar, which has destroyed much of its native habitat. The Indri is also widely hunted for its coat and meat.
