The biggest international conservation non-profits based in the United States
By Rhett A. Butler

Below is a look at the biggest U.S.-based NGOs whose conservation work includes a substantial international component.
Which conservation groups collected the most in donations last year?
This analysis examines financial data from U.S.-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations that focus on environmental work and had over $1 million in revenue in the most recent fiscal year. Out of the 3,500+ organizations that fit this criterion, 1,500 have a strong focus on nature and wildlife conservation. Of these, 218 have significant international conservation programs.
Key Findings:
💲 Conservation groups in this analysis received $11.3 billion in contributions and $16.6B in revenue last year, with combined assets totaling $55.9B. While these figures are substantial, they are small compared to other nonprofit sectors like health and education and the for-profit sector (https://mongabay.cc/lCl0eI and https://mongabay.cc/4nDIoW). For example, Feeding America received $3.9B in contributions and gifts in 2022.
🌿 The Nature Conservancy is the largest entity in this field. Its functional expenses ($909 million) are more than three times those of the next three largest groups. The Nature Conservancy received $941M in contributions and $1.17B in revenue.
🌳 Organizations with international programs tend to be larger than those focused solely on the U.S.
🐅 Zoos have the highest median revenue, functional expenses, and contributions of any category.
Caveats:
⚠ Limited scope: This analysis covers only a fraction of relevant entities in the United States. Many organizations besides 501(c)3s engage in environmental work, including government agencies, private companies, Indigenous nations, communities, and other tax-exempt organizations. Additionally, there are numerous international environmental groups and U.S. nonprofits with international branches.
⚠ Data gaps: High-level financial data does not reveal how much funding is allocated to specific programs within NGOs. For example, it doesn’t show the proportion of an organization’s funding that goes into conservation work or international programs.
⚠ Subjectivity: Defining what constitutes a conservation group is subjective. During this analysis, it became clear that relying solely on NTEE codes is insufficient, as some organizations are misclassified or engage in activities beyond what their code suggests.
⚠ No indication of efficacy: Financial data alone does not indicate effectiveness. Bigger is not necessarily better, as I noted before: "Impact is not solely measured by revenue. Environmental nonprofits often measure success through policy changes, conservation milestones, and community engagement, which can be equally significant though less financially quantifiable."
So while this analysis provides insights into the financial landscape of conservation-focused nonprofits, it should be viewed with these limitations in mind.
