French Polynesia Forest Information and Data

According to the U.N. FAO, 42.3% or about 155,000 ha of French Polynesia is forested, according to FAO. Of this 25.8% ( 40,000 ) is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse and carbon-dense form of forest. French Polynesia had 10,000 ha of planted forest. French Polynesia's forests contain 21 million metric tons of carbon in living forest biomass. Biodiversity and Protected Areas: French Polynesia has some 116 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 36.2% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 31.9% are threatened. French Polynesia is home to at least 959 species of vascular plants, of which 58.4% are endemic. 1.3% of French Polynesia is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

With the halt of French nuclear testing in 1996, the military contribution to the economy fell sharply. Tourism accounts for about one-fourth of GDP and is a primary source of hard currency earnings. Other sources of income are pearl farming and deep-sea commercial fishing. The small manufacturing sector primarily processes agricultural products.
