Forest Information and Data
According to the U.N. FAO,
17.6% or about 435,000 ha of Rwanda is forested, according to FAO. Of this 1.6% ( 7,000 ) is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse and carbon-dense form of forest. Rwanda had 373,000 ha of planted forest.
Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2010, Rwanda lost an average of 5,850 ha or 1.84% per year. In total, between 1990 and 2010, Rwanda gained 36.8% of its forest cover, or around 117,000 ha.
Rwanda's forests contain 39 million metric tons of carbon in living forest biomass.
Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Rwanda has some 999 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 0.4% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 3.0% are threatened. Rwanda is home to at least 2288 species of vascular plants, of which 1.1% are endemic. 7.7% of Rwanda is protected under IUCN categories I-V.
2011 Update
In May 2011, Sassan Saatchi of Caltech's Jet Propulsion Lab and colleagues published a paper in PNAS with new carbon stock estimates for global tropical forests.

Rwanda: Economy
Economy - overview: | Rwanda is a poor rural country with about 90% of the population engaged in (mainly subsistence) agriculture. It is the most densely populated country in Africa and is landlocked with few natural resources and minimal industry. Primary foreign exchange earners are coffee and tea. The 1994 genocide decimated Rwanda's fragile economic base, severely impoverished the population, particularly women, and eroded the country's ability to attract private and external investment. However, Rwanda has made substantial progress in stabilizing and rehabilitating its economy to pre-1994 levels, although poverty levels are higher now. GDP has rebounded and inflation has been curbed. Despite Rwanda's fertile ecosystem, food production often does not keep pace with population growth, requiring food imports. Rwanda continues to receive substantial aid money and received IMF-World Bank Heavily Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) initiative debt relief in 2005. Kigali's high defense expenditures have caused tension between the government and international donors and lending agencies. An energy shortage and instability in neighboring states may slow growth in 2006, while the lack of adequate transportation linkages to other countries continues to handicap export growth. | GDP - per capita | $1,300 (2005 est.) | GDP - real growth rate (%) | 4.8% (2005 est.) | Agriculture - products | coffee, tea, pyrethrum (insecticide made from chrysanthemums), bananas, beans, sorghum, potatoes; livestock | GDP - composition by sector (%) | agriculture: 37.6%, industry: 22.8%, services: 39.6% (2005 est.) | Industries | cement, agricultural products, small-scale beverages, soap, furniture, shoes, plastic goods, textiles, cigarettes | Economic aid - recipient | $425 million (2003) | Debt - external | $1.4 billion (2004 est.) | Population below poverty line (%) | 60% (2001 est.) | Labor force - by occupation (%) | agriculture 90% |
