United States of America
Forest Information and Data
According to the U.N. FAO,
33.2% or about 304,022,000 ha of United States of America is forested, according to FAO. Of this 24.8% ( 75,277,000 ) is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse and carbon-dense form of forest. United States of America had 25,363,000 ha of planted forest. Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2010, United States of America lost an average of 384,350 ha or 0.13% per year. In total, between 1990 and 2010, United States of America gained 2.6% of its forest cover, or around 7,687,000 ha. United States of America's forests contain 19,308 million metric tons of carbon in living forest biomass.
Biodiversity and Protected Areas: United States has some 2001 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 26.3% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 9.4% are threatened. United States is home to at least 19473 species of vascular plants, of which 20.7% are endemic. 8.4% of United States is protected under IUCN categories I-V.
